Planting Plans Queenstown
Climate-matched plant selections that thrive in Queenstown — designed by a qualified landscape horticulturist.
Most failed gardens in Queenstown don't fail because of bad planting — they fail because the wrong plants were chosen for the site. A planting plan fixes that before you spend a dollar at the nursery.
We design bespoke planting plans for Queenstown properties — every species chosen for your soil, aspect, exposure, and how you actually want to live in your garden. The result is a plan you can plant yourself, hand to your landscaper, or have us install.

"The right plant in the right place — every time."
What's in a Planting Plan
Every plan we deliver is a full working document — not a shopping list.
Site Walk-through
An on-site visit to read your soil, aspect, slope, and exposure. We map sun and frost pockets and listen to how you actually want to use the space.
Plant Schedule
A complete list of every plant — botanical and common name, quantities, pot sizes, mature height and spread, and where to source them locally.
Layout Plan
A scaled drawing showing where each plant goes, with spacing and groupings designed for how the garden will look in 1, 3, and 10 years.
Seasonal Notes
Watering, mulching, and aftercare guidance for the establishment year. Most plant losses happen in the first 12 months — a good plan plans for that.
Designed for Queenstown Conditions
A plan that works in Auckland will fail in Queenstown. We plan for what your site actually deals with.
Frost & Cold
Queenstown sees frosts much of the year and lows that punish soft-leafed plants. Every species we specify is chosen for proven hardiness in our specific microclimate, not generic NZ averages.
Wind & Sun
Lake winds desiccate broad leaves and high-altitude UV burns soft foliage. Small-leafed and silver-leafed species are prioritised in exposed positions.
Dry Summers
Queenstown summers are hot and dry. Drought-tolerant species, deep mulching, and smart grouping reduce watering once plants are established.
Free-Draining Soils
Our soils drain fast and hold few nutrients. Plant selection and soil preparation are designed for what's actually under your lawn — not idealised loam.
How It Works
A clear, four-step process from first visit to a planting plan you can use.
On-site Consultation
We visit your property to assess conditions and understand how you want the space to feel and function. Usually 60–90 minutes.
Concept & Plant Palette
We draft a plant palette tailored to your conditions — natives, exotics, or a considered mix — and share it for your feedback before drawing the plan.
Final Planting Plan
You receive a scaled plan, full plant schedule, and aftercare notes — ready to plant yourself or hand to our team to install.
Optional Installation
If you'd like us to source the plants and install them, we can quote the planting separately — but the plan is yours to keep either way.
Frequently Asked Questions
The questions people most often ask before booking a planting plan.
Do I need a planting plan if I'm hiring a landscaper?
Yes — most landscapers will plant what's available at the nursery, not what's right for your site. A planting plan locks in the right species, quantities, and spacing before anyone breaks ground, which usually saves money over the life of the garden.
How much does a planting plan cost?
It depends on the size and complexity of your garden. Small courtyards and single beds start lower; larger residential gardens involve more site analysis and a longer plant schedule. We'll give you a fixed quote after the initial consultation — no hourly creep.
Can I plant it myself?
Absolutely. The plan is yours to use however you like. Many of our clients DIY the planting on weekends using the schedule and layout. We can also recommend local nurseries that supply eco-sourced plants.
Native, exotic, or a mix?
Whatever fits your goals and conditions. We're qualified horticulturists, not native purists — we choose what will actually thrive and look right for your home. A formal European-style garden and a wild native bank are both on the table.
Do you do planting plans for new builds?
Yes — these are some of our favourite projects. Getting the planting right from day one on a new build is far cheaper than retrofitting after a few seasons of plant losses.
